Women's Basketball Falls To Mt. St. Mary's 59-54

BOX SCORE NEWBURGH, NY – The Hunter Hawks women's basketball lost 59-54 to the Mount Saint Mary's Knights on Tuesday night. The loss drops the Hawks to 1-2 on the early season.

"I'm very proud of the way the team fought tonight," said head coach John Garrett. "It was our first true away game, it was a great environment but we just didn't make enough shots."

Ayanna Hudson led all players in points and rebounds, notching her 2nd straight double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds. CUNYAC Player of the Week Kristen Markoe notched her 3rd straight double-double tallying 15 points and 11 rebounds.

"Ayanna was a real key for us tonight," said coach Garrett. "She dominated the boards, her interior scoring was unstoppable and her defense was the key to us keeping the score close."

The Knights were led by three players in double digits, Marisa Delzio scored 17, while Lauren Romao scored 11 and Natalie Candarelli scored 10.

In the second half, the Hawks trailed by nine points with just over 10 minutes remaining but they were able to fight back. Markoe made two three pointers to tie the game with 6:01 remaining, reenergizing the Hawks. From that point on the game remained close with the largest lead being four points.

The Hawks would tie it up again with three minutes to go on a jump shot by Carolyn Kweon, but that would be last time the Hawks would be that close as the Knights had some late clutch shooting and made all their free throws.

"We played really well in all facets of the game, we won the rebounding battle and we kept our turnovers down," said coach Garrett. "We were able to get the shots we wanted but we just didn't make them. This was by far our best effort all year and this young group is coming together quickly and we will learn from this game."

The Hawks return to action on Friday at the Hunter Tip-Off Tournament. The two day tournament at the Sportsplex kicks off with Hunter playing The College of Old Westbury on Friday at 5pm.
