BOX SCORE NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter women's basketball team lost an overtime thriller 59-56 to CCNY on Friday night. The loss drops the Hawks to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in CUNYAC play.
The Hawks controlled the first half with their aggressive defense, holding the Beavers to 20% shooting from the field in the first half.
Combining stifling defense and timely shooting the Hawks took a nine point lead with 5:13 left in the first half after a
Kristen Markoe three-pointer. Two minutes later, after a mini run by the Beavers, Markoe would hit two free throws to once again put the Hawks up nine. The Hawks would head into halftime with a 25-17 lead.
The Hawks would grow their lead in the second half to as much as 12 points after
Joey Chan made one-of-two from the free throw line giving the Hawks a 41-29 lead with 6:26 to play.
In the final five minutes of play, the Beavers Karissa Core would hit three, three-pointers, the final one coming with 1:11 on the clock to make the score 47-46 Hunter.
Ayanna Hudson would hit one-of-two from the line to give the lead back to the Hawks but the Beavers Taylor Pompilo would hit a layup with eight seconds left, sending the game into overtime.
After falling behind early in overtime, Makoe would hit four free throws to give the Hawks a three-point lead. Liz Durchhalter would tie the game after hitting a three but the Hawks would fight back with
Ashley Yu hitting a three-pointer from the wing to give the Hawks a 56-53 lead with 1:21 to go.
Bria Fisher and Robin Daley would hit back-to-back jumpers to give the lead back to the Beavers. The Hawks could not convert in the final minute as the Beavers would make enough free throws to secure a 59-56 victory.
Markoe notched her ninth double-double of the season with 23 points and 11 rebounds, Hudson also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Hawks will return to action Tuesday December 30, when they travel to New Jersey to take on Rutgers-Newark at 1pm.
