Madison, N.J. - The #5 seed Hunter Hawks women's basketball team defeated #4 seed Drew University 78-76 in overtime to advance to the semi-finals of the ECAC D-III Metro Tournament.
The Hawks (16-13) jumped out to an early 13-5 lead in the 1
st half but that lead would quickly vanish as the Rangers (13-13) fought back to make the game close the entire half. The Hawks would end the half up by seven thanks to two three pointers by
Kristen Markoe and
Kristin Sells in the final two minutes. The Hawks shot 16-of-26 (61.5%) from the field in the 1
st half and forced 13 Rangers turnovers.
The 2
nd half played much like the 1
st half with the teams trading baskets, but the Hawks still maintained a lead until 7:45 remained and the Rangers took their first lead 55-54. Drew would pull ahead by as much as five points but the Hawks fought back thanks to
Nicole Lenard scoring the final five Hawks points to tie the game.
In the OT period it was the Markoe and Lenard show, they combined to score all 13 Hawk points to secure the victory.
"Our resilience was the key to tonight's big win," said head coach Vana Loukissas. "We executed our game plan and overcame every challenge we were faced with. The players' devotion to each other and to our coaching staff was evident by their performance throughout the game, and especially during overtime."
Markoe led all scorers with 28 points, she also grabbed nine rebounds. Lenard scored 22 points, while
Krissi Thomopoulos scored 14.
The Hawks advance to play #1 seed Kean University on Saturday March 8
th at 5:00pm. The game will be played at College of Staten Island.
