Staten Island, N.Y. - The Hunter Hawks women's basketball ended their 2013-2014 season last night in the ECAC NY/NJ Metro Championship against Kean University, losing 69-49.
The Hawks battled hard in the 1
st half keeping the game close throughout the period. With the game tied 10-10 with 14:10 to go until halftime, the Cougars went on a 10-0 run over the next 2 minutes. The Hawks fought back cutting the lead to 25-21 with 2:35 left in the half. The Cougars would enter the break with a 28-21 lead.
In the 2
nd half the Cougars maintained a comfortable lead. With 7:02 remaining, the Cougar defense clamped down and took control. Over the next 2 minutes, the Cougars would increase their lead from 11 to 18.
Senior
Kristen Markoe scored a game-high 25 points and senior
Nicole Lenard scored 16. The two Hawks combined to score all but 41 of the teams 49 points. Markoe, shot lights out from 3-point land, going 6-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Ayanna Hudson led all players with 14 rebounds.
Essence Casey's 15 points led the Cougars. Jazmine Davis chipped in with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Simone Smith had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
The Hawks finish the 2013-2014 season with a 16-14 record and advanced deeper into post-season play than any other Hawk team since 2009-2010. The Cougars advance to the finals where they will take on Brooklyn College Sunday March 9
th at 5pm.
