2014 Alumni Homecoming Weekend

New York, NY - As part of the 2014 Alumni Homecoming Weekend, the Hunter College Athletics department held two events, one that honored the life and memory of Fermin Pena and the other honoring 30 years of service by Coach Ed Zarowin.

For 30 years, Coach Z has been a part of the Hunter family, coaching Men's and Women's Cross-Country, Men's and Women's Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field. He has guided over 180 teams in his tenure and been named CUNYAC Coach of the Year 33 times. Over 60 current and former athletes gathered together for a Surprise Brunch to honor all that Coach Z has done for his players and the program.  Nigel Franklyn, one of Hunter's most accomplished athletes, spoke as did former players, Kevin Sullivan and Michelle Nurse-Hall.

The Fermin Pena Memorial Volleyball Game was held on Saturday April 5th to honor one of the most beloved members of the Hunter Hawk family. Fermin was a volleyball player from 1987-1991, not only did he play but he was the manager for the women's volleyball team and softball team. We lost Fermin earlier this year and wanted to honor his life by playing the game he truly loved.

The Hunter Hawk family was honored to welcome members of the Pena family so that we could celebrate a truly great man. Sports Information Director Brendan Kennedy presented Mr. Pena's brother with a commemorative plaque, a memories book and Fermin's no. 5 volleyball jersey.

Friends and family joined together and played a friendly game of volleyball. The teams were coached by Fermin's former coach and founder of the Hunter men's volleyball team, Gary Wholstetter and Hunter alum Denise Ortega. The games were fun but competitive and each team won a set.
