FLUSHING, NY – The Hunter women's tennis team got their first win of the season in sweeping Lehman College 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center. The Hawks now sit at 1-3 on the season.
The Hawks opened strong in doubles play sweeping doubles. #1 pair
Julia Vranas &
Abigail Rojas took care of their counterparts 8-2 as did #2 pair
Janani Bavanandan &
Marie Visker. #3 pair of
Angelina Usherenko &
Sara Beck won their matchup 8-1.
Playing #1 singles for the Hawks was Vranas who won her match 6-2, 6-1. Bavanandan played #3 singles winning her match 6-4, 6-0. Usherenko won her matchup in #4 singles 6-0, 6-1 as did #6 singles
Pauline McGlone.
Paulina Szegda won her match in #5 singles 6-3, 6-3.
The best match of the day was the #2 singles matchup of Rojas and Lynessa George. George won the first set 6-2 but Rojas battled back to win the second set 6-3, forcing a tie break. In the tie break Rojas and George battled, not allowing either to take an advantage. Ultimately Rojas took control winning 10-7.
The Hawks return to action Monday when they travel to New Jersey to take Rutgers-Newark at 5pm.
