NEWARK, NJ – The Hunter women's tennis team won their second consecutive match with a 9-0 sweep against Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders Monday afternoon.
The Hawks started out strong in doubles with #1 pair

Abigail Rojas defeating their opponents 8-0. #2 pair
Angelina Usherenko and
Sara Beck also won their match 8-0. #3 pair
Tetyana Gavrylenko and
Paulina Szegda won their match 8-2.
"We played tough in doubles with very minimal errors," said head coach
Erienne Gale. "We gained a lot of confidence from those matches which led to us playing well in singles."
In the singles matches, the Hawks started out great with #3 singles Usherenko dominating her match 6-0, 6-0. #5 singles Beck and #6 singles Gavrylenko also won their matches with ease, Beck won her match 6-1, 6-1 and Gavrylenko won hers 6-0, 6-1.
"Angelina was awesome in her match hitting great winners and very few unforced errors," said Coach Gale. "Tetyana was also excellent in her match hitting winner after winner and playing a very consistent match."
In the #1 singles match, Vranas outlasted her opponent with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. The #2 singles matchup was also a three-setter with Rojas coming away with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory. The #4 singles match was won by Szegda in two sets, 6-1, 7-6(7-3).
"Overall we did a great job and we are getting better," said Coach Gale.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday when they will host CUNYAC foe College of Staten Island, the team that knocked the Hawks out of last season's CUNYAC tournament. The match will be at the USTA National Tennis Center at 3:30pm.
