BOX SCORE NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter women's basketball team ended their three game losing streak with a 54-50 victory over the CCNY Beavers on Wednesday night. The victory improves the Hawks 7-13 overall and 4-7 in CUNYAC play.
The first half was extremely close with neither team being able to take more than a six point lead. The Hawks trailed 15-9 midway through the half but then responded with six straight points in less than a minute to tie the score 15-15.
"Our seniors really led us tonight," said head coach
John Garrett. "They were great in all aspects, defense, scoring and rebounding."
The Hawks went into the halftime break with a 25-21 lead.
In the second half the Hawks were able to clamp down defensively while making timely shots to increase their halftime lead.
After back-to-back baskets by
Kristen Markoe and
Ashley Yu, the Hawks pushed their lead to 10 points with just over seven minutes to go in the game.
The Beavers cut into the Hawks lead with good free throw shooting and timely baskets. After a Liz Durchhalter 3-pointer made the score 46-45 Hunter with two minutes remaining, the Hawks got clutch scoring from Markoe who answered Durchhalter's 3-pointer with a 3-pointer of her own.
Markoe led the Hawks scoring a game-high 22 points while
Joey Chan chipped in with 16 points.
Dimitra Thomopoulos played a rugged interior game scoring eight points and grabbing seven rebounds in only 21 minutes of play.
"Kristen really stepped up in the 2
nd half when we needed her," said Garrett. "Her clutch 3-pointer late in the game really broke up their momentum."
The Hawks return to action Friday night when they will host CUNYAC foe John Jay College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5pm.
