New York, NY - On Wednesday, September 30, the men's soccer team hosted the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC contest held on Randall's Island. A score in each half proved just enough to come away with the victory as they outlasted their counterparts, 2-1. With the win, the Purple and Gold surpass their win total from last year with a 5-5 record, 2-1 in conference action.
The Hawks got on the board very early on; in the seventh minute, Nico Serna was fouled inside the box resulting in a penalty kick. At exactly 6:38, the junior defender from Brooklyn, NY lined up and found the back of the net as he beat John Jay keeper
Ilya Keygen to put his team up 1-0. For the next nearly 80 minutes, the game remained scoreless.
However, in the 86th minute, Hunter's leading goal scorer, Brandon Fiscina, broke the silence. On an assist from teammate Diego Cisneros, Fiscina slipped the ball past Keygen for the second goal of the game, giving the Purple and Gold a comfortable 2-0 lead with less than five minutes remaining.
In a last second attempt, Kenny Bennitez of Brooklyn College spoiled Garrett Babbitt's hopes of a shutout when he successfully converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute.
Babbitt made six saves in the win while his counterpart made eight in the loss. Hunter put up 15 shots, 10 of which were on goal and held a six to two corner kick advantage.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 3 when they host Lehman College in a CUNYAC contest at Randall's Island at noon.
