New York, NY - The women's tennis team had a double-header today as they took on downtown Lexington Ave. rivals, Baruch College at noon and then followed with a game against John Jay; both in CUNYAC showdowns. Against Baruch, they fell behind early 3-0 after doubles and were to mount a comeback in the singles portion of the match, ultimately falling, 7-2. However, they rebounded against John Jay by sweeping the doubles portion and taking two in the singles competition before having to call the game due to darkness. The split puts Hunter to 4-5 overall, 4-2 in CUNYAC action.
Baruch Box ScoreOlivia Funk and Janani Bavanandan were ousted 8-2 in doubles and lost their singles matches 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively at first and second singles. The duo of
Paulina Szegda and
Sara Beck fell 8-4 in second doubles while
Catherine Ng and
Pauline McGlone also went down, 8-2.
Beck was pushed by Diana Federkova at fifth singles, but she prevailed in a difficult win, taking the victory by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 10-7. Ng snagged the final win on the day for the Purple and Gold after defeating Nicole Serras at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-2.
John Jay Box ScoreThe Hawks kept the same line up for doubles against John Jay and were successful in each flight by scores of 9-7, 8-4 and 8-4 in first through third respectively. Szegda took care of business at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-1 while Beck improved her singles record with win in fifth flight over Jessica Melchiorre, 6-0, 6-0.
Olivia Funk was up 6-2, 5-2 at top flight while
Mary Budin lead her counterpart at sixth singles, 6-0 before calling the match.
The Hawks return to acton on Wednesday, October 14 when they host St. Joseph's-LI at the USTA National Tennis Center at 3:30 pm. It will mark the final game of the regular season before heading into post-season play.
