Elmira, NY - Hunter College women's volleyball went 2-2 this past weekend at the Elmira College Tournament on Friday and Saturday, defeating Wilkes University and Utica College, but falling to SUNY Cortland and SUNY Canton.
Hunter fell in the first match of the tournament against SUNY Cortland in three sets, featuring scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-16.
The Hawks kept the first two sets close, but were unable to get a win to begin the tournament 0-1.
Julia Connolly led the team with 12 kills in the loss, while only committing one error for a .423 hitting percentage.
Miranda Hogan led the Hawks with 32 assists in the match.
Hunter turned around to get a win in four sets against Wilkes with scores of 25-20, 25-20, 21-25 and 25-22 on Friday. Hunter was able to capture the first two sets before falling in the third. The Hawks regained composure to take the fourth set to go 1-1 on Friday at the tournament.
Connolly led the team for the second time that day, recording 16 kills, while also notching a team-high 19 digs.
Taylor Kerr-Haiduk followed with 13 kills of her own and Hogan earned 40 assists.
The Hawks started Saturday with a three-set defeat against SUNY Canton. The match featured scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-21.
Hunter finished up the tournament with a victory against Utica College in a five-set battle, featuring scores of 25-23, 30-28, 25-18, 25-12 and 15-11.
The Pioneers took the first set by just two points for a 1-0 lead in the match, but Hunter would fight back in the second, winning in a close set to tie the match, 1-1. Utica was able to pull out the win in the third, but the Hawks once again came back, dominating the fourth set with a final score of 25-12.
The Hawks took the fifth set by just four points for the 3-2 win over Utica.
Connolly led the team with 23 kills, while Hogan notched a career-high 53 assists.
The Hawks will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20 against St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, NY.
