Patchogue, NY - Hunter College women's volleyball defeated St. Joseph's-Long Island on Tuesday in four sets with scores of 27-25, 25-14, 27-25 and 25-20.
The first set began with the Hawks jumping out to a 6-3 lead, but the Golden Eagles scored seven-straight points to take the lead, 10-6. Hunter would not come back until the end of the set, scoring five-straight points to tie the set at 24. Despite forcing an attack error, Hunter would not prevent St. Joseph's from scoring the last three points of the set to win, 27-25, and lead the match, 1-0.
Hunter took charge in the second set to take a 10-4 lead. The Hawks continued to dominate, scoring eight straight points for a 22-10 lead and eventually take the set easily with a score of 25-14 to tie the match, 1-1.
The third set proved to be another battle, featuring 11 tied scores and eight lead changes. Hunter took a 5-3 lead in the beginning, but it would not last long as St. Joseph's went on a 4-1 run to regain the lead. From there the Golden Eagles would have the edge for most of the set as the Hawks continued to tie the score but would never jump ahead. It would not be until Hunter tied the score at 25 that they would record two kills to take the set, 27-15 for a 2-1 lead in the match.
The third set was another close one until the Hawks finally hit their stride by scoring a dominating six-straight points for a 20-13 lead. The Golden Eagles would come back from a timeout with vengeance, scoring six-straight points of their own to trail by just one point. Hunter regained composure long enough to close out the fourth set with a 5-1 run to win the set, 25-20 and take the match, 3-1.
Julia Connolly led the team on offense with 17 kills, while
Angelica Mae Aquino followed with 12 of her own.
Miranda Hogan posted 41 assists and
Haley Trunkettt and
Paola Martinez each notched 15 digs for the Hawks.
Hunter returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 22 when they host Medgar Evers College at 6 p.m.
