New York, NY - Hunter College men's soccer won a thriller on Wednesday, defeating College of Staten Island with two minutes left to play in overtime with a score of 2-1.
The are 7-9 and 3-4 in CUYAC play after beating the previously undefeated Dolphins.
The Dolphins struck first in the game, taking a 1-0 lead at the 16:33 minute mark, but the Hawks would score a goal of their own one minute later as Bryan Suetergaray headed the ball into the net off a rebounded shot by
Jacob Manna.
The Dolphins would notch several shots in the remaining minutes of the first half but none would fall as the score remained tied, 1-1 at the half.
Neither team would score in the second half, sending the game into overtime. The first ten minute segment featured four shots by Staten Island, but Hunter would hold on, forcing the game into the second ten-minute overtime half.
It looked as though the game would end in a tie until Hunter's
Aristofanis Ioannidis took control of the ball, dribbled up the field and sent a long shot into the right side of the goal to end the game with two minutes to play and give the Hawks a 2-1 overtime win.
Much of the win can be attributed to the goalkeeper play of Hunter's
Garrett Babbitt, who ended the game with 17 saves. The Dolphins recorded 26 shots while the Hawks had just nine.
The team returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 28 when they play in the conference quarterfinals.
