Queens, NY - The #3 Hunter Hawks took on the top-seeded Bearcats of Baruch College in the 2015 CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women's Tennis Championship on Tuesday. Falling behind after the doubles portion of the match, the Hawks were unable to mount a comeback and settled for runner up status as the match came to a close, 5-0 in favor of the top-seed. The loss puts the Purple and Gold's record at 6-7.
Baruch got off to an early lead as their first flight doubles team consisting of Allie Jackson-Hing and Daria Vasekina won their match by retirement against
Olivia Funk and
Janani Bavanandan.
Paulina Szegda and
Catherine Ng found themselves up 4-3 at third flight doubles, but were halted there and overtaken 8-4 by Brooke Severance and Hayley Bester. In a similar situation, Sara beck and
Angelina Usherenko fell victim to the same 8-4 loss after leading by a point.
With a 0-3 deficit, Hunter had to win five of the six singles matches to win. However, the Bearcat's Vasekina secured their fourth victory after defeating Bavanandan in two straight sets 6-1. Soon after, Isabel Arias sealed the deal for the Bearcats defeating
Angelina Usherenko  6-2, 6-0 to finish the 5-0 sweep.
The Hawks return to action with a match against Oneonta on April 9, followed by an away contest against Yeshiva a day later.
