Kings Point, NY - Hunter College women's volleyball got a non-conference win on Tuesday night against the United States Merchant Marine Academy in four sets with scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-9.
With the victory, the Hawks move to 9-9 overall and 4-0 in CUNYAC play.
Hunter jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the first set, but the Mariners went on a 7-1 run to lead 9-5. The Hawks were able to tie the set at 11, thanks to two kills from
Julia Connolly, and then score four-straight points to take a 19-14 lead.
Despite a late comeback from USMMA, Hunter was able to pull out a 25-22 win to lead the match, 1-0.
In the second set the Mariners came out hot, scoring five straight points for an early 5-0 lead. The Hawks recovered, going on a 8-1 run to gain the lead. From there the Hawks would dominate, finding six kills to make the score 17-10. The Mariners would begin to come back at the end of the set again, but Hunter was able to get away with a 25-18 win.
USMMA came out in the third set with 7-1 lead on the Hawks. They continued to dominate, eventually earning a 22-13 lead then ending the set with a kill to take the third 25-22 and make the match score 2-1.
Hunter regained composure in the fourth set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead then ending the set with a 12-3 run for an easy 25-9 win to take the match, 3-1.
The Hawks had a great match on the offensive side as four players recorded at least 10 kills.
Angelica Mae Aquino led the team with 15 kills, while
Taylor Kerr-Haiduk followed with 14.
Paola Martinez earned 12 kills and Connolly notched 11.
Miranda Hogan continued to lead the Hawks at the setter position with 36 assists and
Haley Trunkett tallied 18 digs. Connolly was also a huge help defensively, recording 17 digs in the match.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, Oct. 10 when they take on Penn State Abington at 12 p.m. and Penn State-Harrisburg at 4 p.m. in Abington, Pa.
