Union, NJ - The women's basketball team kicked off their 2015-16 campaign with a loss against Kean University, 84-60. The Hawks had three in double digit scoring while
Ayanna Hudson posted a double-double. They drop to 0-1 on the season but look to get back on track on Tuesday, November 17 at their home opener against Mount Saint Mary College at the Sportsplex at 5pm.
Widly Couloute's .500 shooting from the field led the offense for Hunter as her 16 points was the team high. Newcomer
Jade Aponte saw 35 minutes of action and added 13 points and four assists while Hudson sunk 10 points and grabbed a game high 15 boards. As a team, the Hawk's shot .385 from the field, had 18 points from the bench and logged 32 points in the paint.
Hudson and Aponte accounted for the first eight points as the Hawks led most of the first quarter. A layup by Couloute with 2:32 left gave the Hawks their biggest lead; a four point cushion. Kean took the lead late as they closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run. In the second, the point differential ballooned to as much as 15, favoring the hosts. Not bowing out, over the remaining 4:35, the resilient Hawks dug down and pulled within five and headed into the locker room behind by just seven points.
In the final two quarters, Hunter was held to under thirty percent shooting and sunk just one trey while Kean shot nearly 42 percent and drilled nine triples. The Hawks were outscored by 14 in the third but only three in the fourth. However, it was not enough as the 24 point deficit was too much to overcome.
