New York, NY - The women's basketball team snapped a four game losing streak earlier this evening after defeating the CCNY Beavers by a score of 77-72. In an evenly contested contest, the Hawks found themselves down by one at the half, but powered through the final two quarters to come away with the win.
Backed by four players in double figures, the Purple and Gold sunk a season high nine triples.
Jade Aponte,
Christine Patterson,
Widly Couloute and
Ashley Yu accounted for 66 of the team's 77 points. Aponte registered a game and collegiate high 21 points which included five trey's and going 6-7 from the charity stripe.
Christine Patterson shot 8-14 from the floor for 16 points while Couloute chipped in with 15 points and six boards. Yu capped the scoring quartet with 14 points.
As a team, Hunter shot 48.1 percent from the floor and 56.3 percent from downtown. They dished out 15 assists and earned 10 steals in the win.
The Hawks struggled early on, putting up just five points compared to their counterpart's 10 with 3:50 left on the clock. Still down by five with 2:15 to go, a jumper followed by a triple by Yu tied it up, but a layup by Taylor Pompilio gave CCNY a 16-14 advantage heading into the second. The Purple and Gold took their second lead of the game at the 8:10 mark on another trey from Yu. It was short lived as CCNY went on a run and found themselves up by seven with 4:00 on the clock. Hunter fired back by closing out the second with an 11-5 run.
A big third quarter turned the tables on the hosts as Hunter rallied to hold a seven point upperhand with 2:02 on the clock. The Beavers began to slowly chip away at the lead, but a successfully converted three-point play by Couloute with time expiring in the period gave Hunter a six-point cushion heading into the final quarter. Erika Richards nailed a three pointer to bring the Beavers to within five, but through the efforts of Patterson, Couloute and Aponte, the lead grew to 12 with just over three minutes left to play. Although CCNY chopped the differential back to five, the Hawks cruised down the stretch to win by five.
