Women's Basketball Tops St. Joseph's Brooklyn

The Hawks had scoring contributions from seven different players

New York, NY - The women's basketball team won their second game in a row on Sunday after defeating St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn by a score of 75-69 in the non-conference matchup. Four scored in double figures as the Hawks used a balanced team attack to hold on to the lead in the fourth and secure the win. They now stand at 4-5 overall, 1-2 in CUNYAC action.

Jade Aponte led all scorers with 20 points that came from 7-13 shooting form the field which included three triples. Widly Couloute and Ayanna Hudson each registered double-doubles; Couloute with 16 points and 13 boards and Hudson with 11 points and as many rebounds. Ashley Yu chipped in with 14 points of her own while Christine Patterson added seven points and seven rebounds.

Aponte and Patterson landed back-to-back treys to get the Hawks going from the start. Leading most of the way, it was not until 11-11 when Victoria Porcasi's jumper tied the game. However, Hudson sunk two free throws to give her team a two point upperhand at the end of the first.

Brittany Cervino opened the second with a three pointer to put the Purple and Gold in a one point hole. Couloute's layup gave the Hawks the lead once again which they grew into an eight point advantage.

Despite holding a nine point lead at one point in the third, Hunter was out-scored by the visitors in the quarter, 18-17 and headed into the fourth up by four. In the final 10 minutes, a 15-4 Hawk run gave them a 12 point cushion which proved to be more than enough to hold on to seal the deal for their fourth win of the year.

The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, December 30 when they host Manhattanville College at the Sportsplex at 6pm.
