Kings Point, NY - The women's basketball team visited the Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy last night for a non-conference matchup. Despite having three players in double-figures, and two recording double-doubles, the Hawks were unable to come back to the city with a win, falling by a score of 66-44. The loss drops them to 2-5 overall, 0-2 in CUNYAC play.
Both
Ayanna Hudson and
Widly Couloute registered double-doubles. Hudson grabbed 13 rebounds and chipped in with 10 points to compliment her five blocks on the defensive end of the court. She currently leads the conference in total blocks and blocks per game. Meanwhile, Couloute pulled down 10 boards and went 5-10 from the field for 13 points.
Jade Aponte matched her teammate's scoring performance with 13 points of her own. The Hawks shot just 28.1 percent from the floor and scored 26 points in the paint. They
Aponte came out firing on all cylinders, draining two three-pointers and going 5-6 from the line; all of her 13 points came in the first half while she was responsible for six of the Hawk's eight first quarter points. At the start of the second half, the Purple and Gold were trying to erase an eight point deficit. While cutting it down to six, it then quickly ballooned to as much as 15 with less than three minutes left before the half. Through the efforts of Hudson and Aponte, the duo knocked down seven points in the final 1:59, heading into the half down 31-19.
Hovering around a double-digit deficit for the majority of the third, but once again, over the final three minutes, they went on a 7-0 run to close out the quarter. However, the Hawks went cold in the last quarter, missing their final seven shots and turning the ball over four times in the final five minutes ultimately resulting in a 66-44 loss.
