New York, NY - Hunter College volleyball fell to Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday night, dropping three close sets with scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-22.
The Hawks earned an early lead in the first set, but Stevens would quickly pull ahead, recording three-straight kills for a score of 9-5. A service ace from Hunter's
Haley Trunkett would put the Hawks within three points, making the score 14-11, but the Ducks would once again go on a run, taking advantage of Hunter errors for a 19-14 lead.
From there the Ducks committed three-straight errors to allow the Hawks to pull within three for a score of 20-17. The Hawks would then collect three-straight kills from
Taylor Kerr-Haiduk and
Paola Martinez to trail by just one point. Despite the comeback, Stevens would pull out the first set victory with a final score of 25-22.
Hunter started out slow in the second, quickly falling behind 3-0, but then pulling it together to tie the score, 4-4. From there the lead would go back-and-forth as the set featured 11 tied scores and six lead changes. Stevens eventually pulled ahead by three points to make the score 13-10, but the Hawks did not go away, recording a kill from
Julia Connolly to tie the score at 16. Off another kill from Connolly, the Hawks earned aa 21-20 lead, but the Ducks recovered, capitalizing off Hunter errors to take the second set, 25-23.
Stevens took an early lead in the third set and did not give it up until Hunter would go on a 5-0 run, featuring kills from Connolly, Kerr-Haiduk and Trunkett to pull ahead 10-9. The Ducks regained the lead and maintained it until the Hawks tied the score at 22. The comeback would not be enough as Stevens took the set 25-22 to win the match, 3-0.
Connolly led the Hawks with 11 kills, while
Miranda Hogan recorded 31 assists. Trunkett led the team defensively, tallying 10 digs in the loss.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, September 12 when they face The City College of New York at 9 a.m. and York College at 11 a.m.
