New York, NY - Hunter College women's volleyball went 3-1 at the Hunter Invitational this past weekend, earning wins against Sarah Lawrence College, Montclair State University and Kean University, before falling to Salisbury University in four sets.
The Hawks first played Sarah Lawrence, taking the match in three sets with scores of 25-6, 25-3 and 25-10.
Hunter dominated the first two sets, not allowing the Gryphons to score in double-digits. The third set allowed the Gryphons to score ten points, but the Hawks still came away with an easy 25-10 victory to take the match.
The offense was a team effort by the Hawks as
Angelica Mae Aquino with nine kills, followed by
Marnie Kotlyar,
Julia Connolly and
Samantha Barrett who each tallied eight.
Miranda Hogan recorded a season-high of 28 assists, while Connolly recorded 13 digs.
Later in the day Hunter took on Monclair State, getting a win in four close sets with scores of 25-22, 20-25, 28-26 and 25-23.
Each set was a battle as every set featured a team within five point or less. The most exciting set came in the third as the score was tied at 24 before the Hawks would score the next point. Montclair State did not go away, earning the next two point to lead by one. The Hawks were able to pull it out, recording three-straight kills from Connolly and Aquino to win, 28-26. Hunter would go on to take the fourth set and win the match, 3-1.
Connolly led with 15 kills in the match, while
Taylor Kerr-Haiduk followed with 11. Hogan earned a career-high 34 assists in the win, while
Haley Trunkett notched a season-high 26 digs.
On Saturday, the Hawks kicked off the day with a match against Salisbury, falling in four sets with scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-21 and 25-15.
Despite earning a dominating 25-12 win in the second set after falling in the first, the Hawks would drop the next two sets to earn a loss, 3-1. Connolly led the team on offense for the second time that day with 14 kills, while Hogan notched 20 assists and Aquino led the team on defense with 14 digs.
The last match of the invite would be a competitive one as Hunter got the win in five sets against Kean with scores of 25-18, 27-25, 25-23 and 15-13.
The Hawks battled it out in the first two sets to earns wins, but the Cougars would fight back and get wins in the next two games to tie the match 2-2. The fifth set featured five tied scores as the Hawks came back from an early deficit to take the set 15-13 and win the match 3-2.
Connolly led the team on offense with 24 kills and just six errors for a .305 hitting percentage. Hogan earned a new season high of 45 assists, while Trunkett led with 17 digs.
The women's volleyball team will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 29 when they travel to Mount Saint Vincent for a 7 p.m. match.
