Riverdale, NY - The women's volleyball team took on Mount Saint Vincent in a non-conference contest last night. In four close sets that were all decided by less than three points, the Hawks came out on the short end of the stick, falling 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 27-25) in a tightly contested matchup. With the loss, the Hawks slip back to .500 with a 7-7 overall mark while their counterparts advance to 4-8.
CUNYAC Player of the Week,
Julia Connolly, and
Samantha Barrett led the offensive attack for the Hawks, combining for 26 of the team's 52 kills. Additionally,
Taylor Kerr-Haiduk and
Paola Martinez chipped in with nine and eight kills respectively. Freshman setter and CUNYAC Rookie of the Week,
Miranda Hogan matched her season high in which she set in the previous game with 45 assists while fellow award winner, Libero of the Week
Haley Trunkett led the Purple and Gold with 18 digs.
As a team, the Hawks committed five less errors and posted a hitting percentage that was higher than Mount Saint Vincent. Additionally, they recorded nine blocks compared to the home team's five.
Falling behind by five, late in the opening set, a kill by Connolly sparked a 5-0 run to to bring the Hawk's up 21-20. However, the Dolphins managed to pull ahead once again and hammered home the final point in the set on a kill by Maria Leineweber.
In the second, Hunter led 8-5 but the lead was erased by six straight Dolphin points, putting the Hawks in a three-point hole. Once again, the Hawks found themselves in a tight battle and down by two at 22-20. However, four straight points, capped with a Barrett kill evened out the scoreboard at 1-1.
It was a similar story in the third and fourth sets. It was a see-saw battle until the very end with neither team pulling ahead by an insurmountable lead. However, the Dolphins prevailed down the home stretch to serve the Hawks their seventh loss of the season.
Head Coach
Val Lang and the rest of the squad return to action on Friday, October 2 when they head to Ramapo, NJ to compete in the Ramapo Tournament. They will take on Ramapo College at 6pm on Friday and then Saturday they face SUNY Cortland and Brooklyn College at 11am and 1pm respectively.
