New York, NY - Hunter College women's basketball fell to 1-3 in conference play this past week after losing to John Jay in a close game on Saturday with a score of 76-69.
Despite five players scoring in double-figures for the Hawks, Hunter could not hold off the Bloodhounds, falling behind in just the final minutes of the game.
Ashley Yu led Hunter with 17 points, including shooting five for seven from behind the arc.
Widly Couloute followed with 16, while
Christine Patterson added 12.
Jade Aponte and
Ayanna Hudson each contributed 10 points in the loss.
Hunter picked up the early lead in the first quarter as Patterson, Couloute and Yu each scored to give the Hawks the 9-3 advantage. The Hawks continued to roll, picking up four more points for a 13-5 lead. The Bloodhounds would not be stopped for long, eventually tying the score at 19 with two minutes left in the quarter and then trailing by just three at the end of the first.
John Jay started the second quarter strong, going on a 9-2 run, but Hunter caught back up, taking back their lead at the 3:14 mark with a three-pointer from Yu. John Jay closed out the second quarter with five-straight points to lead, 36-34 at halftime.
Hunter dominated most of the third quarter, beginning with an 11-2 run to lead 45-38 with six minutes left. The Bloodhounds found points to shorten the lead, but Hunter managed to finish the third quarter with a 53-49 advantage.
Neither team would score for the first three minutes of the fourth quarter as John Jay struck first with a layup to trail by just two points. Hunter led by as much as seven points with six minutes to play, but the Bloodhounds began to make a comeback by scoring a three-pointer with a minute left, propelling them to just a one-point deficit. Eight-straight free throws in the last thirty seconds would give John Jay the victory, 76-69.Â
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 5 when they face Medgar Evers at 6 p.m.
