Aponte Leads Team with 21 Points

Brooklyn, NY - Hunter College women's basketball got the win over Medgar Evers on Tuesday with a score of 64-54. The Hawks are now 5-7 overall this season and hold a 2-3 CUNYAC record.

Jade Aponte led the Hawks with 21 points in the victory, while Ashley Yu followed with ten. Ayanna Hudson and Widly Couloute led the team on the boards, recording 13 and ten rebounds, respectively.

The Cougars took the early lead in the game, scoring the first four points, but Hunter would go on a 10-0 run to lead by six at the 5:18 minute mark. The Hawks were able to close out the first quarter on top, leading Medgar Evers 12-10.

Both teams would struggle to score in the second quarter until the Cougars ended the drought with a free throw two minutes into the quarter. The Hawks maintained their lead until Medgar Evers scored six-straight points to pull ahead, 22-19 with three minutes left in the second. The lead would change several times, but Hunter managed to get the 30-29 edge at halftime.

The third quarter was much of the same as Hunter continued to lead, but the Cougars would never stray too far, never falling behind by more than five points until the 1:36 minute mark. From there Hunter went on a 6-0 run to close out the third with a score of 45-37.

Three minutes into the fourth quarter Hunter scored six-straight points for their largest lead of the game, edging out Medgar Evers by 14 points. The Cougars would fight back with a couple of jumpers but by then the Hawks were too far ahead, closing out the fourth quarter with a comfortable lead to get the win, 64-54.

The Hawks return to action on Friday, Jan. 8 for a 5 p.m. game against York College at Hunter Sportsplex.
