New York, NY - The women's basketball team took on their CUNYAC downtown rivals, Baruch College in a conference contest on Friday evening. After falling behind by nine at the half, the Hawks were unableto mount a comeback and, despite the efforts of
Ashley Yu and
Christine Patterson combining for 27 points, were stopped in their tracks as they fell by a final score of 70-47. With the loss, Hunter slips to 6-11 overall, 3-6 CUNYAC.
Yu led the way for the Purple and Gold with 15 points while Patterson's 6-18 shooting from the field yielded her 12 points.
Ayanna Hudson only scored four, but made her presence felt down low with a game high 14 rebounds; 11 off them coming on the defensive end. At the end of the day, seven different players contributed with at least three points while all nine had a part in the team's 44 rebounds.
The Hawks were out in front for the majority of the first quarter after Patterson sunk two jumpers which was followed up by
Widly Couloutes triple, making it a 7-6 affair in the early stages. They were unable to build up more than a three point lead and were held scoreless over the final 2:17 as back-to-back layups by Jacqueline Kennedy and Veronica Ganzi gave the Bearcats a 16-13 lead heading into the second.
An opening quarter three-pointer by the hosts quickly extended the point margin to five. It was a sluggish quarter for the Purple and Gold as they only managed eight points while their counterparts built their lead to nine by halftime. The struggles continued for Hunter as they were put into a deeper hole, one that reached 15 points, in the third quarter. Despite closing the quarter out with back-to-back deuces by Yu and
Selina Lim, they still faced a 10-point deficit heading into the final 10 minutes.
Lim opened the final quarter with a mae free throw, resulting in a nine-point gap, but it would be the closest they would get to Baruch. The Bearcats went on a 17-3 run that ultimately put the nail in the coffin as they went ahead by 23 and closed the game with a final score of 70-47.
The Purple and Gold are back in action on Wednesday, January 27 when they host CCNY at the Sportsplex at 5pm.
