Hawks Snap Six-Game Skid; Defeat John Jay 57-45

Both Ayana Hudson and Ashley Arias recorded double-doubles.

New York, NY – The women's basketball team took on cross-town rivals, John Jay in a CUNYAC contest yesterday evening.  After being knotted through the first two periods, the Hawks used a big third quarter to pull away as they secured their seventh victory of the season with a score of 57-45. The win improves them to 7-13 overall, 4-8 CUNYAC.

Ashley Arias and teammate Ayanna Hudson posted double-doubles as they were part of the Hawk trio that scored in the double figures. Arias tallied 15 points and snagged 11 boards while Hudson chipped in with 14 points of her own to compliment her 11 rebounds. Freshman Christine Patterson did her part with 11 points while Ashley Yu, Selina Lim and Angelica Mejia combined for 17 points.

The first half was a tightly contested 20 minutes which featured eight ties, nine lead changes, and either team getting ahead by more than four points. Arias, Hudson and Patterson combined for seven points apiece and accounted for 21 of the Purple and Gold's 24 first half points while Yu's triple rounded out the scoring.

At the 6:08 mark in the third, a free throw from Lim sparked a 14-5 run which started with eight unanswered points. Lim drilled a triple with less than 40 seconds remaining and Yu sunk a deuce to make it a 10-point Hawk advantage heading into the final quarter. Back-to-back jumpers by Meija gave Hunter a 12 point lead in the early stages of the period, their largest of the game. The Bloodhounds cut the deficit to eight on two occasions but it was not enough as Hunter finished strong down the stretch, coming away with the 57-54 win.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, February 2nd when they host the Cougars of Medgar Evers College in a CUNYAC contest at the Sportsplex at 5pm.
