BOX SCORE New York, NY - Hunter College women's basketball knocked off Alfred University on Saturday afternoon with a score of 73-64 to capture the 2016 Hunter College Tip-Off Tournament Championship.
The Hawks are now 2-1 this season after going undefeated over the weekend.
The Purple and Gold went up 12-3 to start the game thanks to points from
Edina Music,
Ashley Yu,
Christine Patterson and
Selina Lim. The Saxons began to get points on the board, scoring ten in the last three minutes of the first quarter, but Yu ended the first with a shot from behind the arc to give Hunter an 18-13 lead.
Alfred started the second quarter by cutting Hunter's lead to just one point, but the Hawks began a 15-4 run, going 8-11 from the floor in the remaining seven minutes of the quarter to make the score 38-22 at halftime. Hunter posted a commanding 51.7 field goal percentage in the first half in comparison to Alfred's 29 percent.
Hunter came back in the third quarter to remain in control as
Ashley Arias hit the first three points for the Hawks. The Saxons managed to cut Hunter's lead to 11 points at the 2:48 minute mark but the Purple and Gold finished the quarter strong to lead by 14 going into the fourth quarter.
The Hawks continued to hold off the Saxons in the fourth quarter until three minutes left in the game when Alfred went on a run to make Hunter lead by single digits for the first time since the beginning of the game.
Selina Lim closed out the game with two free throws to help the Hawks hang on to the lead and get the 73-64 victory.
Lim led the Hawks with 19 points, shooting 7-10 from the floor and going perfect from behind the arc (3-3). The sophomore also posted a team-high five steals, good enough to be named the Tournament MVP. Music and Patterson followed with 16 and 11 points, respectively, while Arias recorded a team-leading seven rebounds.
Theresa Leung tallied nine points in the win, dishing out five assists to be named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Hawks shot a blistering 49.1 percent from the floor in the win, while the Saxons recorded a 39.3 field goal percentage.
The squad returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 when they host USMMA at 5 p.m.
