BOX SCORE New York, NY - Hunter College women's basketball got a win over United States Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday night, defeating the Mariners with a score of 49-46 at the Hunter Sportsplex.
The victory gives the Hawks a 3-1 overall record this season.
Hunter immediately jumped out to a 10-2 lead, getting points from
Ashley Yu,
Selina Lim,
Theresa Leung and
Phoebe Valenton. The Hawks let the Mariners back in the game with four-straight points but still led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Yu opened up the second quarter with a shot from behind the arc to give Hunter a nine-point lead. Slowly the Mariners began to diminish Hunter's lead, going on a 9-0 run to go up 21-19.
Ashley Arias hit a shot in the paint for the Purple and Gold but USMMA managed to take the lead at halftime with a score of 27-23.
Things didn't look good for the Hawks as they struggled to take care of the ball in the third quarter, falling behind by as much as 14 points. With 2:54 left in the third, the Hawks regained composure, scoring eight-straight points to cut the Mariner's lead to just five.
To open the fourth quarter, Leung hit a three-pointer and Lim converted on two free throws before hitting a three of her own to take back the lead with a score of 41-40.
Christine Patterson, Leung and Yu each scored in the last two minutes, but USMMA did not give up, scoring twice to trail by just one point with 44 seconds to play.
Lim would seal the victory for Hunter with a rebound off a Mariner missed layup and then hitting two free throws in the last ten seconds of the game as Hunter won, 49-46.
Leung led all scorers with 13 points, while Yu and Lim followed with 12 and 11, respectively.
Edina Music recorded a team-high nine rebounds in the win.
The Hawks return to action on Nov. 29 when they travel to their first CUNYAC game against Brooklyn College.
