BOX SCORE Brooklyn, NY - Hunter College women's basketball improved their overall record with a victory over St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on Monday night, 80-75.
The Hawks are now 7-3 this year with a 3-1 record in the CUNYAC.
Hunter's ability to force turnovers was the difference maker in a close game as the Hawks led by just one point at halftime. Leading 35-34 at the half,
Jade Aponte scored 13 of her 21 points in the first 20 minutes of the game.
The second half opened to several lead changes until a three-pointer from Aponte four minutes in sparked a 10-4 Hunter run. Aponte,
Ashley Arias and
Phoebe Valenton combined for 15 points in the last six minutes of the third quarter to give Hunter a 56-48 lead.
Arias started the fourth quarter by scoring six of the Hawk's first eight points. With the Purple and Gold leading by as much as 11 points in the fourth, the Bears made it interesting by going on a run to cut Hunter's lead to just two points over a two minute span.
Though the score remained close, the Hawks closed it out with free throws to pull out an 80-75 win.
Aponte led the team with 21 points, while Arias recorded her third-straight double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds.
Edina Music earned her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 boards and Valenton tallied a career-high 11 points in the victory.
Hunter recorded just 11 turnovers in the game, while forcing 27 for St. Joseph's.
The Hawks return to action on Dec. 30 when they host Rutgers-Camden at 1 p.m.
