Women's Basketball Dominates Medgar Evers, 67-45

The Hawks had three score in double figures.

New York, NY – The women's basketball team got back on the winning track as they handily defeated Medgar Evers College by a score of 67-45 in front of the homecoming crowd at the Sportsplex earlier this evening. The Hawks had three players in double figures as they boost their record out to 4-2 overall, 1-1 in CUNYAC play while the Cougars will continue to look for their first win as they slip to 0-6, 0-1 CUNYAC.

Ashley Yu led the scoring attack for Hunter with 14 points on an efficient 4-7 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-4 performance from the charity stripe. Teammate Theresa Leung was also impressive from the floor, going 3-4 from behind the arc and tallying 13 points of her own. Selina Lim chipped in with 10 points and four assists while a total of 10 players scored at least two points or more. Defensively, Hunter was credited with 22 steals and forced 37 Cougar turnovers.

Medgar Evers led 6-2 within the opening 1:18, but it was short lived after Hunter responded with 15 unanswered points to make it 17-6. Two free throws by the Cougars with 1:35 left to play in the first would be the only two other points they scored in the quarter while the efforts of Edina Music and Yu yielded another six points, resulting in a 23-8 cushion heading into the second period.

Capitalizing on their counterpart's struggles from the field, the Purple and Gold tallied another 19 points while holding the visitors to 1-14 shooting and just five points in the second quarter. The Hawks used a devastating 17-0 run spanning nearly five and a half minutes to give them their largest lead of the half with a 31 point differential.

The lead grew to as much as 35 after Phoebe Valenton made good on a jumper at the 6:28 mark in the third. Hunter went cold down the stretch and made just one layup by Selena LaFranca, but the 8-2 Medgar Evers run made just a dent in the lead as the Cougars found themselves down 57-28 at the end of the third.

In the fourth, despite outscoring Hunter by seven, the cushion was too much to overcome. Hunter cruised through to the end of the game where the final whistle blew with the scoreboard reading 67-45 in favor of the hosts.

Hunter returns to action on Sunday, December 4 when they take on the Violets of NYU in a non-conference matchup. Tipoff is slated for a 1pm start.
