New York, NY - The #14 men's volleyball team added two more wins to their resume after Monday's CUNYAC Multimatch hosted by John Jay. The Purple and Gold began the morning with a comeback, 3-2 win over Baruch and then followed it up with a sweep of Lehman College. The two victories push Hunter out to 10-3 overall, 5-0 in CUNYAC play.
Baruch RecapThe Hawks were led by the trio of
Steven Tarquinio, Benjamin Crusinberry and
Blake Hogan, each of whom reached double digit kills. Tarquinio led the way with 15 to couple an impressive .462 hitting percentage while Crusinberry's 13 kills went along with his four block assists and one solo block. Hogan registered 10 kills with six digs while
Benjamin Cassidy did his part with eight kills, three service aces and three block assists.
The Purple and Gold fell behind two sets to none after falling 25-18, 25-21, but bounced back and knotted the match at 2-2 after taking the third and fourth set with identical scores of 25-22. In the fifth and final set, it was the Hawks that came away with the win as they edged out their downtown rivals by the narrowest of margins, 17-15.
Lehman RecapThe Hawks had a balanced attack with contributions coming from seven different players in the kills category, led by
Matthew Zukowski's seven and Crusinberry's six.
Nicolas Sanchez took care of the setting duties and was credited with 18 assists.
Hunter got out to an early 4-1 lead and quickly turned it into 8-3. After Lehman closed the gap to three, the Hawks unleashed a 9-2 run that ended with a service ace, bringing the Hawks five points away from the first set victory. The final three kills came from the hands of Zukowski, Crusinberry and Hogan as they closed the set, 25-10. In the second, Lehman came out firing and held a 5-2 advantage. Hunter responded with six straight points and then seven more unanswered points in the latter stages of the match to put the score at 20-8. The Purple and Gold rolled to another easy 25-13 set victory after Crusinberry ended on a kill. In the final set, a Sanchez kill was the start of four straight points to open the match. Lehman responded with four unanswered points of their own to knot it at six. Down 11-9, Hunter went on a 6-1 run and then closed the final set on a 7-1 run, securing their 10th victory of the season and second of the day.
Hunter returns to action on Thursday, February 18 when they host the Cardinals of York College at the Sportsplex at 6pm.
