New York, NY – The men's basketball team hosted the Cougars of Medgar Evers College yesterday evening in a CUNYAC showdown at the Sportsplex. After leading the visitors by one at the half, the Hawks were slowed in the second and outscored by 16 resulting in a 75-60 loss. In defeat, the Purple and Gold slip to 3-19 overall, 3-10 in CUNYAC play.
Brian Kruger's 20 points was the best offensive output for the Hawks as 15 of them came from behind the arc.
Matt Franks registered his second double-double of the season with 15 points to compliment and match his season high 10 rebounds.
Robert Borusiewicz chipped in with 11 points of his own.
Hunter came out hot as Kruger opened the game with a triple which was followed up by a Franks jumper and good free throw from Borusiewicz to make it a 6-0 affair within the opening 1:52. However, at the 11:53 mark, a 10-5 lead quickly turned around after Medgar Evers fired back with 10 unanswered points to take a five point advantage. Borusiewicz stopped the bleeding with a layup while Franks's jumper brought it back to a one-point affair. With 1:44 left, the Hawks connected on their final three field goals while forcing their counterparts to miss on their final three attempts, resulting in a 31-30 score with the lead in favor of the Purple and Gold heading into halftime.
The squad went cold in the second half, missing on their first 13 of 14 shots and turning the ball over six times as they watched their one point lead morph into a 19 point deficit with 9:57 left to play. The Hawks turned to the three point shot in an attempt to bridge the gap and connected on six attempts in the final stretch, five of them coming from the hands of Kruger, but it was not enough to overcome the double-digit deficit as they fell by a score of 75-60.
The Hawks return to action on Friday, February 5 when they travel to Brooklyn College to take on the Bulldogs at 7pm.
