Myrtle Beach, SC – The softball team opened up their 2016 campaign on Thursday at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Hawks split the double header, defeating Penn State Altoona 3-1 in the first game but falling to Gettysburg by a score of 0-4 in the second. Their record now stands at 1-1.
Penn State Altoona RecapThe Hawks were efficient as they scored three runs on four hits while holding Penn State Altoona to just a single run. Three of the four hits came from the top of the order as
Taylor Crofts,
Christine Kline and
Victoria Slavik each were 1-2 on the day. Brianna Monaco registered the only other hit for the Purple and Gold. Slavik and
Nicole Fillisetti each were credited with an RBI. In the circle,
Erika Colangelo went the distance and hurled a complete game win, holding the opponents to just five hits, no earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts for her first win of the season.
Penn State Altoona put one run on the board in the fourth after Giedroc led off the inning with a single. She was bunted over and then scored on a throwing error by second base
Stevie Rae Micheli. However, the Hawks struck back and posted two runs in the bottom of the frame, capitalizing on a Penn State miscue. With
Christine Kline on second and and Slavik on first,
Stefanie Abolt's hit to second base resulted in a throwing error by the fielder which allowed Kline to score and put runners on second and third with none out.
Alana Vezza walked to load the bases and Fillisetti's sacrifice fly drove in Slavik for the second run of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Crofts roped a single and then advanced to second on a Kline ground out. She was driven home on an RBI single to center field off the bat of Slavik to go ahead, 3-1.
Colangelo gave up just one more hit over the final two innings as Hunter held their counterparts at bay, and winning their first game of the season in the process.
Gettysburg RecapThe Hawks totaled just three hits as Crofts, Slavik and Abolt all were 1-3.
Sara Beck suffered the loss after tossing 5.1 innings, striking out one and allowing five hits and four runs; of which only one was earned.
Gettysburg got on the board early with one run in the first. They tacked on two more in the fourth and then added their fourth and final run in the sixth.
Hunter had an opportunity in the second when Abolt led off the second with a double and then advanced to third on a ground out by Monaco, but was stranded there as Gettysburg got out of the inning.
Up NextHunter takes on Penn State Altoona once again in the second day of action with a game against Lycoming College to cap the double header.
