Bellerose, NY – The Hunter softball team defeated York College in both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Padavan-Preller complex. The Hawks won the first game 8-2 and then came away with a 15-1 victory in the second. The Hawks improves to an overall record of 6-10 and remain undefeated in CUNYAC play at 4-0.
Game 1 RecapPitchers
Erika Colangelo and
Danielle Zurek combined for a solid day on the mound. They allowed just four hits while striking out nine batters. Offensively, the Purple and Gold registered eight hits, three of which came from
Alana Vezza.
While York got on the board with one run in the first inning, the Hawks fired back with two runs of their own in the top of the second. Vezza began the inning with a ground rule double, eventually scoring off of errors by the Cardinal's pitcher. Later in the inning,
Stevie Rae Micheli scored on a fielder's choice by
Taylor Crofts to go up 2-1.
Hunter increased its lead to 3-1 in the third inning when Brianna Monaco stole home. Colangelo smacked a triple in the top of the fourth inning, scoring on the next at bat after another York error and extending the lead to 4-1 in the process. The Hawks scored two more runs off York errors to end the inning with a score of 6-1.
The Cardinals tacked on an additional run in bottom of the sixth inning to make it 6-2. In the final inning, Monaco lead off with a single followed by a stolen base. Vezza would follow with a single of her own, continuing her stellar day in the batter's box. She scored off of an RBI double from Zurek to go up 7-2. Later on, Micheli would extend the Hawks lead to 8-2, when she scored from third base after a York error.
Game 2 RecapIn game two,
Danielle Zurek and
Sara Beck combined for five innings pitched, nine strikeouts, and allowing only one run scored. Beck got the win, boosting her record to 3-4. Eight Hawks accounted for 15 hints with four having a multiple-hit outing. Vezza continued her impressive performance from the first game and drove in six RBIs to go along with two hits and one run scored.
Leading off with a double, Crofts would eventually score after a Cardinal's error in the top of the first inning. Hunter found themselves up 5-0 in the second inning, highlighted by a
Christine Kline RBI single, immediately followed by a Vezza, two-RBI double. In the top of the third inning,
Emily Ruiz tallied an RBI single when Monaco advanced home. Crofts earned another RBI after she drove in Beck. Vezza grounded out to third base, but still allowed Micheli to score. The Hawks capped the third inning off with a 9-0 score.
The Purple and Gold's biggest inning of the day came in the fourth. The bats dominated the Cardinal's defense, totaling six runs off of four hits, and a 15-0 lead. Highlights include an RBI double for Micheli and a three RBI double for Vezza, ending her day with six RBIs. The Cardinals would score in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game at a final score of 15-1.
The Hawks return to action today at 3:30 PM at Randall's Island in a double header against conference opponent, John Jay College.
