Purchase, NY – The Hunter softball team dropped a double header to out-of-conference foes, Manhattanville, earlier this afternoon. The Hawks fell 7-1 in the first game and then dropped the second by a score of 14-3. The losses move the Purple and Gold's record to 10-13 overall while they remain at 8-1 in CUNYAC play.
Game 1 Recap
The Hawks managed just four hits in the game with
Stefanie Abolt accounting for one of them while driving in the team's only run.
Erika Colangelo went the distance in the circle, hurling six full innings, giving up eight hits and striking out four batters while allowing seven earned runs.
Two solo homeruns by the Valiants opened up the bottom of the first inning, giving them the early 2-0 lead. Another run in the following inning made it a three-run game. The hosts widened the gap even further with a three-run fifth to set the scoreboard at 6-0.
Emily Ruiz collected a two-out single and advanced to second on
Victoria Slavik's hit immediately after. With Abolt up at bat, she notched the third straight single of the inning which scored Ruiz to get the Hawks on the board. However, it would be all the runs they were able to manufacture as Manhattanville went on to score another in the sixth to close the books on a 7-1 Hunter defeat.
Game 2 Recap
Christine Kline registered two hits while her team tallied seven all together. Slavik, and Brianna Monaco each totaled one hit and one RBI a piece while a sacrifice by
Alana Vezza gave her the team's third RBI.
Sara Beck pitched the opening two innings and gave up six earned runs on 10 hits while fanning three.
Danielle Zurek closed the final two innings and allowed two runs on four hits with two strike outs.
A six-run bottom of the first for the home team set Hunter back from the get-go. The Vailants wasted no time adding to their lead with five runs in the second and another three in the third to make it 14-0. Hunter's bats came alive in the fourth. Back-to-back singles put Kline on third and Ruiz on second. Slavik, Abolt and Monaco ripped three singles resulting in three runs scored, but it's all they would be able to get out of the inning as the game ended in the top of the fifth with a final score of 14-3.
The Hawks look to get back on track on Friday, April 22 when they host the University of Scranton at Randall's Island. Game one of the double header begins at 3:30pm.
