Softball Upends Baruch, 18-1

The Hawks even out their overall record at 13-13 with the win

New York, NY - The softball team earned their 13th overall win of the season yesterday afternoon after upending downtown rivals, Baruch College by a final score of 18-1. The Hawks held a comfortable 12-0 lead at the conclusion of the second and run ruled their counterparts with a six-run fifth inning to secure the victory. The win moves them to 13-13 overall and 11-1 in CUNYAC play.

The Purple and Gold registered 17 hits on the day with six registering a multiple-hit outing. Highlighting the day was Stevie Rae Micheli who drove in four runs, scored two and notched three hits; two of which were home runs. Teammate Victoria Slavik also smacked a home run to help her stat line that included two hits, three runs scored and four RBI's. In the circle, Sara Beck secured her seventh win of the season after going the full five innings and giving up just two hits, one run and striking out nine.

With two on and one out in the top of the first, Slavik hit an RBI double to get her team on the board first. Stefanie Abolt followed suit with an RBI single while Ruiz ripped a two-RBI double to right center to set the Hawks ahead 4-0.

After Beck retired the initial three batters, the Hunter bats went to work in the top of the second. Micheli opened the inning with a solo shot to left field. Then with runners on first and second, Slavik smacked a home run to right field to push the Hawks out to an 8-0 advantage. Despite the base clearing round tripper, Hunter loaded the bases and drove two more in off the bat of Beck with her two-RBI single. Taylor Crofts had an RBI single and then Alana Vezza walked to score the inning's eighth run. When all was said and done, the Hawks rang up the Bearcats for eight runs on six hits in the inning and found themselves in a comfortable 12-0 lead.

Baruch got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with one run, but it's all they were able to get. In the top of the fifth, the Hawks once again loaded the bases. Ruiz hit for an RBI single while Beck once again came through in the clutch with a two-RBI single. With two on and none out, Micheli cracked her second home run of the game with a three-RBI shot over the left field fence. The Purple and Gold's six-run, five-hit inning gave them the 18-1 lead.

Beck retired the final three batters to secure the win via the run rule.

The Hawks take on Drew Univeristy today at Randall's Island. First pitch of the double-header will begin at 2pm.
