BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 New York, NY - The Hunter College Softball team split their double-header on Thursday afternoon when they faced off against Drew University at Randall's Island. The Rangers upended the Hawks in the first of the two games with a score of 5-3 but the Purple and Gold bounced back to take the second game 11-3. Hunter moves to an even 14-14 overall record while Drew University holds a 13-21 mark.
 
Game 1 Recap
Despite out-hitting the visitors, Hunter's seven hits only generated three runs while Drew's six hits manufactured five runs. Brianna Monaco went 2-2 on the day with a walk, run scored and an RBI. In the circle, Erika Colangelo went the distance, tossing a complete game but suffering the loss despite two earned runs and six strike outs.
 
In the top of the first, Meghan McGuire put The Rangers on the board, 1-0 when she stole third base and home on consecutive passed balls. Drew extended their lead to 3-0 after a two-RBI single from pitcher Emma Agostini in the fourth.  Drew added two more runs to the scoreboard in the sixth inning after a passed ball followed by an error on the Hunter defense to go up 5-0.
 
The Hawks' bats aided a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning when Monaco's RBI single drove in Stefanie Abolt. Monaco advanced home off a Colangelo sacrifice fly to right field, moving the score to 5-2.
 
The Hawks struck one more time in the bottom of the seventh inning after a wild pitch, allowing Taylor Crofts to safely cross home plate but it's as far as they would go as they dropped the first game by a final score of 5-3.
 
Game 2 Recap
Crofts went 3-4 with two runs scored while Emily Ruiz had a big day with two hits, two runs scored and five RBI's. Additionally, Sara Beck contributed with three RBI's on two home runs while Christine Kline chipped in with two hits, two RBI and one run scored. Danielle Zurek got the job done in the circle, hurling the full five innings, allowing just three hits, no earned runs and striking out six to secure her third win of the season.
 
Scoreless in the first two innings, Hunter broke the game open in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Ruiz hit a solo homerun; her third of the year to give her team a 1-0 advantage. Victoria Slavik ripped an RBI double to bring Kline for a 2-0 lead. After two consecutive walks, Beck stepped to plate with the bases loaded and smacked a base-clearing three-RBI to put the Hawks up 5-0.
 
Christine Kline put the Hawks up 7-0 after a two RBI single in the fourth inning. The Rangers ended Zurek's shutout campaign in the fifth inning, bringing in three runs off four hits for a 7-3 Hunter advantage.
 
Unfazed by Drew's offensive surge, Hunter produced four more runs of their own in the fifth and final inning. They tallied two quick outs before recording three straight singles. With the bases loaded, Ruiz smacked a walk-off, grand slam to center field, ending her stellar offensive day with an 11-3 Hunter win.
 
Hunter College is set to face Stevens Institute of Technology in a double header today at 3PM on Randall's Island.
