New York, NY - Hunter College women's volleyball got a win over United States Merchant Marine Academy in a non-conference match up on Tuesday night, earning the victory in five sets with scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-19 and 15-10.
The Hawks are now 7-7 overall and continue to be undefeated in CUNYAC play.
The Purple and Gold started the first set win dominance, jumping out to a 9-3 lead. The Mariners recorded two-straight kills, but the Hawks would respond by going on a 7-1 run to make the score 16-6. USMMA began a 3-0 run but it did not deter the Hawks from finishing strong as they took the first, 25-14.
The Mariners scored the first two points of the second set but two kills from
Taylor Kerr-Haiduk spurred a 4-0 run from Hunter. From there USMMA outscored the Hawks 10-1 to take the 12-5 lead. The Hawks tried their best to get back into the match, but the Mariners continued to find points off Hunter errors to take the second 25-16.
The third set continued where USMMA left off, immediately taking a 4-1 lead over the Purple and Gold. The Hawks tied the game at 5 but then fell behind after a 7-1 run from the Mariners. While trailing 12-7 Hunter began a spectacular comeback that featured a kill from
Samantha Barrett to help them score eight-straight points and take a 15-12 lead. Hunter closed out the set with a kill from
Julia Connolly to take the third, 25-19 and lead the match 2-1.
The Hawks led 6-5 early in the fourth but USMMA started to take revenge by capitalizing on several Hunter errors to score seven-straight points and force a Hunter timeout. The Hawks seemed to recover by cutting the Mariners' lead to just three points but USMMA was able to get away with the 25-22 win and send the match into the fifth set.Â
The fifth set was all about the Purple and Gold as the team immediately took an 8-3 lead. The Mariners went on a 5-1 run to close in the Hawks but Hunter stayed composed, scoring the last two points of the set to take it 15-10 and win the match, 3-2.
Connolly led the Hawks with 25 kills but was followed closely by Kerr-Haiduk's 16. Barrett added ten kills of her own for a season-high.
Breanna Banske recorded 51 assists and
Miranda Hogan and Connolly each had a team-high of 12 digs.Â
The team returns to action on September 22 when they face Baruch College at 6 p.m. at the Hunter Sportsplex.Â
