New York, NY – The women's basketball team played host to the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College earlier this evening at the Sportsplex in a CUNYAC matchup. Despite holding a two-point lead at the half and heading into the final quarter tied, the Hawks ran out of gas over the final 10 minutes and wound up falling by a score of 58-48. The loss drops the Purple and Gold to 8-9, 4-5 CUNYAC while the Bulldogs advance to 12-3, 8-1 CUNYAC.
Jade Aponte led the offensive attack with 15 points while
Ashley Arias recorded a double-double with 11 points and as many rebounds.
Theresa Leung did her part with nine points and four assists.
Hunter struggled in the opening quarter, finding themselves down by eight with 3:17 left to play after
Christine Patterson and Leung were the only two to find the inside of the rim.
Selina Lim's made free throws to give her team six points, but it's as many points as they would get in the opening 10 minutes.
The Purple and Gold turned things around in the second and outscored their counterparts by nine and more than tripled their offensive output with 21 points. Facing an 11 point hole with 7:46 showing on the clock, Aponte nailed a trey while Leung sunk a jumper to kick start the offense. A 10-0 Hawk run over the ensuing 2:51, capped by a layup from
Edina Music, gave Hunter the one point lead, 21-20. In the final minute, another jumper from Leung and a layup from Arias put the Purple and Gold ahead 27-25 heading into halftime.
Gradually, the Bulldogs flipped a four point deficit into a six point advantage in the third period. The 10-0 Brooklyn run was finally ended after a made free throw from Music. Hunter went on to score the final six points of the quarter to tie the game at 37.
In the closing act, Hunter went cold from the field and gave up a 16-3 run which set them back by 12 with 3:30 left to play. The deficit proved too much to overcome down the stretch as time ran out with the scoreboard in favor of the visitors.
The Hawks return to action on Friday, January 20 when they host the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in a CUNYAC contest. Tip off is slated for a 5pm start.
