Jamaica, NY – The women's basketball team took on the Cardinals of York College in a CUNYAC contest earlier this evening. Despite trailing by one at the end of the first quarter, the Hawks buckled down defensively and held the hosts to just 15 points over the final three quarters while their offense hit its stride. The final score read 63-30 as the Purple and Gold secured the win to advance to 11-10, 7-5 CUNYAC while York falls to 2-19, 2-11 CUNYAC.
Jade Aponte led the attack with 16 points on 7-17 shooting from the field. 11 other players recorded at least two points with
Widly Couloute and
Theresa Leung combining for 16 points and nine rebounds.
Ashley Arias did her part with eight boards and seven points. Overall, the Hawks out-rebounded their opponents, 52-32, held the Cardinals to less than 24 percent shooting from the field, and forced 27 turnovers.
York held a slight edge throughout the first quarter which featured three ties. Aponte and Leung accounted for the first 10 points and 12 of the team's 14 total points in the quarter which ended with an Aponte jumper to cut the deficit to one.
In the second, York struggled and netted just four points while the Hawks were held scoreless through the initial 4:55 until Arias broke the silence with a made field goal. It sparked a 14-0 run in which five different players all contributed to and put the Purple and Gold up 28-19.
A combination of tough Hawk defense and a York offense who could not find the bottom of the net resulted in a 10 point differential as Hunter used the entire 10 minutes to go on a 13-3 run, giving them a 19 point cushion.
Hunter unleashed a 13-2 run in the opening 5:28 to build a 32 point. It would increase marginally to 33 and would hold at that after Couloute drilled a triple on the Hawk's final possession.
