Gettysburg, PA - Hunter College men's basketball fell in a close game to Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon, dropping the consolation game with a score of 60-54 at the Gettysburg Tip Off Tournament.
The Hawks start the season 0-2, while the Bullets are now 1-1 in opening weekend.
The Purple and Gold managed to come back from an 11 point deficit in the first half but it was not enough in the final minutes of the game.
The Bullets took the immediate lead in the first half as the team converted on three pointers to lead 34-23 at the 1:05 minute mark. Six Hunter players went into halftime with points on the board as Danny Fusco,
Amer Lukac and
Matt Franks each recorded five.Â
The Purple and Gold opened up the second strong with a seven point run, led by George Keener's five points. Gettysburg responded with a basket from behind the arc, but Fusco, Franks and Lukac each tallied points to tie the game, 37-37 with 15 minutes to play.
With the Bullets pulling ahead again, Fusco took charge by scoring six-straight points to tie the game at 43 at the 9:04 minute mark. From there the Bullets looked to be in a comfortable position, taking a 58-47 lead with three minutes left to play, but the Hawks did not give up, going on a 7-0 run to trail by just four with 35 seconds left in regulation.
Hunter was forced to foul in the remaining seconds as Gettyburg recorded free throws and took the game, 60-54.
Defense was a factor for the Hawks who forced 20 Bullet turnovers off 14 steals, while Gettysburg recorded just five steals in the game. Fusco led the team with 18 points, followed by Keener's 11.
The squad returns to action on Nov. 25 when they travel to Union College.
