Women's Basketball Scores 100 Points To Capture Hunter Tip Off Title

Hawks Defeat Olivet, 100-80

BOX SCORE New York, NY - Hunter College women's basketball defeated Olivet College on Saturday in the title game of the Hunter Tip Off Tournament, taking down the Comets with a score of 100-80.

The Hawks improve to 2-0 so far this season as the Comets start the year 1-1.

The game remained close until the fourth quarter when the Hawks scored 29 points in 10 minutes to get the win. Jade Aponte and Maya Thompson combined for 55 of the team's total points as Thompson recorded 18 rebounds in the victory.

The Purple and Gold led by as much as 12 points in the first quarter before the Comets began to make a comeback, tying the score at 21 and then pulling ahead, 28-25 to go into the second. Aponte opened up the second quarter with back-to-back three pointers to tie the game and then give Hunter the 31-28 lead.

The score continued to go back-and-forth until points from Thompson and Christine Patterson at the end of the second helped Hunter to a 44-40 lead going into halftime.

Aponte led the team with 17 points in the first half, while Thompson already posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

The third quarter featured another close game with four tied scores, but the Hawks began to hit their stride, closing it out on an 11-2 run to gain a six-point lead going into the fourth.

Olivet struck first in the fourth quarter but from there the Purple and Gold took charge, going on a 15-2 run to finally earn a comfortable lead of 86-69 with six minutes to play. The Hawks continued to dominate, led by Aponte's 12 points in 10 minutes, finishing off the game by getting the 100-80 victory.

Aponte led the Hawks with a 31-point performance and adding a team-high five steals. Thompson ended the game with 24 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Theresa Leung and Janine Conway each finished in double-figures, recording 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The squad returns to the court on Nov. 21 when they travel to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a 5 p.m. game.
