Jersey City, N.J. - Hunter College women's basketball improved to 4-1 this season with a win over New Jersey City University on Monday night, taking down the Gothic Knights with a score of 78-43.
Ten players contributed to the Hawk's total of 78 points, with
Jade Aponte and
Janine Conway leading the way with 17 each.
Hunter's
Christine Patterson put up the first points of the game as the Hawks jumped out to an 18-8 advantage by the end of the first quarter. The Purple and Gold started the second quarter with a 10-2 run, led by
Phoebe Valenton's three baskets, to lead 26-10. The Hawks went into halftime with a 49-19 lead after shooting 48.7 percent from the field.
Maya Thompson converted on a three-point play to start the second half for the Hawks, helping the team continue to dominate into the fourth. Valenton,
Selina Lim,
Ashley Yu and
Sarah Curto all scored in the final ten minutes as Hunter finished off the Knights, 78-43.
The Hawks committed just 14 turnovers in the victory, forcing NJCU to record 30 as Aponte led the team with six steals. Aponte added her 17 points, along with Conway tallying a career-high by totaling seven field goals. Valenton recorded 11 points, while Thompson had a team-high 10 rebounds.
The team returns to action on Friday, Dec. 1 when they host Brooklyn College at 5:30 p.m.
