New York, NY – Behind a third quarter surge, and a 24 point game high performance from
Christine Patterson, the Hawks served Brooklyn College their first loss of the season by way of an 87-83 Hunter victory. The win bumps the Purple and Gold to 5-1, 1-0 CUNYAC while the Bulldogs move to 5-1, 0-1 CUNYAC. It also marks the first win the Hawk's recorded over Brooklyn since 2009.
14 of Patterson's 21 points came from the charity stripe while three others chipped in with double figures;
Jade Aponte with 18,
Janine Conway with 12 and
Maya Thompson with 10 points.
Ashley Arias was the game high rebound leader after pulling down 10 misses.
The Hawks got off to a sluggish start, managing just four points in the opening four minutes of action on jumpers from Aponte and Patterson. At the 5:12 mark, they found themselves down by seven, but the deficit grew to 12. Two from the charity stripe from Lim lifted the drought late while the Hawk defense buckled down and held Brooklyn scoreless over the remaining 2:30 as they headed into the second with the score reading 20-15.
The tides turned in the second as Aponte heated up and dropped 12 points in the quarter. Despite facing a seven-point deficit with 6:40 remaining, the Purple and Gold went on a 7-0 run to pull even with the Bulldogs at 27-27. With under a minute to play, a triple from Brooklyn's Alexandra Moogan gave her team a one point lead, but Lim answered with a hard earned lay up to retake the lead as they headed into the half ahead 36-35.
Hunter opened the third on six unanswered points and then grew the lead up to as much as 18 on a late 13-6 run, capped by a Patterson triple. A layup from
Theresa Leung kept the Hawks in a double-digit advantage, despite a jumper from Brooklyn's Karen Mak with one second remaining.
After three minutes of back-and-forth play, the Bulldogs combined for a 5-for-6 performance at the charity stripe, cutting their deficit to six. A double technical foul delivered to the head coach of the visiting team sent Patterson to the free throw line, where she proceeded to knock down four consecutive shots to extend the lead back to double-figures. The hosts maintained the upper hand down the stretch to keep their opponents at bay, although Brooklyn scored four points in the final 10 seconds.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, December 5 when they travel to Brooklyn to take on the Cougars of Medgar Evers College. First tip in the CUNYAC matchup will take place at 5pm.
