Brooklyn, N.Y. - Hunter College men's basketball's
Matt Franks scored a layup with two seconds to play to give the Hawks the 74-73 win over Medgar Evers College on Tuesday night.
The Purple and Gold improve to 3-4 overall and start CUNYAC play 2-0 this season.
The first half featured a 13-point lead for the Hawks as five players contributed to the 15-2 score with 12 minutes left in the half. The Cougars slowly began to make a comeback, trailing by just three points at the 9:17 minute mark, but the Purple and Gold hung on to the lead to take a 35-26 advantage at halftime.
Gio Gabbidon led the Hawks in the first 20 minutes with 10 points, shooting 5-6 from the field off a team shooting percentage of 45.2.
Amer Lukac opened up the second half with a layup just 12 seconds in, but the Cougars responded with points of their own, going on an 11-5 run to trail by just two points with 16 minutes left in regulation. Two minutes later
George Keener and Lukac scored two points each for the Hawks as the team attempted to hold onto their lead.Â
Medgar Evers' Terrell Williams hit a shot from behind the arc at the five minute mark to pull the Cougars within one, the closest score since the start of the game. The two teams traded points back-and-forth as two-straight baskets from Keener and a three-pointer from
Elvis Kolasinac kept the Hawks in the lead.
With 1:23 to play the Cougars scored to take their first lead of the game. Franks hit two free throws in response, but that did not deter the Cougars, who scored four-straight to get the 73-70 edge with 14 seconds on the clock. Lukac hit a quick shot in the paint on Hunter's next possesion to help them trail by just one and the Hawks then immediately committed a foul.
With six seconds to play, Keener grabbed the defensive rebound off a missed free throw and the team found Franks, who sunk his game-winning layup at the two second mark to give the Hawks the exciting 74-73 victory.
Five players scored in double-figures with Lukac leading the way with 16 points. Keener and
Danny Fusco scored 13 each, while Franks totaled 12 and Gabbidon added 10. The Cougars were led by Maurice Swaby's 20 points.
The Purple and Gold return to the court on Friday, December 8 when they host John Jay College at 7 p.m.
