Men's Basketball Improves to 3-0 in CUNYAC With Win Over Bloodhounds

Keener Leads Hunter Scoring

New York, N.Y. - Hunter College men's basketball improved to 3-0 in conference play on Friday night by defeating John Jay College with a score of 67-55 in the Hunter Sportsplex.

With the victory, the Hawks even out to 4-4 overall this season and remain undefeated in CUNYAC play.

John Jay got the early lead in the first half before the Hawks went on a run, finding scoring from Amer Lukac, Gio Gabbidon, Matt Stroud and George Keener to get the seven-point advantage with 12:21 on the clock. From there the Hawks stayed in control, finding a solid lead and heading into the locker rooms at halftime with a 37-25 advantage. Keener led the team with 11 points in the first half, while John Jay's Doug Levy also recorded 11.

The Purple and Gold continued to play well in the second, going up by as much as 15 points in the first four minutes. The Bloodhounds went on a small run to cut the lead to just nine points with 11:57 to play, but James Blair and Gabbidon quickly responded with baskets to keep the Hawks in a comfortable position.

The Hawks maintained their efficient scoring throughout the rest of the game, including an exciting alley-oop play from George Keener and Danny Fusco with under a minute to play, making the score 63-50. Hunter finished it off with two free throws from Matt Franks as the Hawks got the win, 67-55.

Keener led all scorers with 18 points, while Gabbidon finished with 13 and Lukac added a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawks shot 43.1 (22-58) percent from the floor in the victory.

The squad returns to action on Tuesday, December 12 when they host New York University at 7 p.m.
