Staten Island, NY - Hunter College softball went 1-1 on the first day of the CUNYAC Championship Tournament on Saturday, falling to #3 seeded Lehman College with a score of 4-1 before defeating #5 seeded Baruch College in five innings.
Alana Vezza and Briana Manaco led the Purple and Gold in the first game of the day, both going 2-3 at bat. Manaco singled to left field in the second inning to allow Vezza to score and give Hunter the 1-0 lead.
The Lightning responded by tying it up in the third inning and then recording three more runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. The Hawks would not score in the remaining innings as they fell in the first round of the tournament.
Hunter faced Baruch soon after, immediately getting on the board in the third inning as
Samantha Molloy,
Victoria Slavik and
Stefanie Abolt each tallied an RBI and the Hawks led 3-0.Â
The Hawks tacked on six more runs in the fourth inning including a huge triple to right center by Slavik, allowing Molloy, Vezza and
Taylor Crofts to score. The Bearcats were unable to respond as the Hawks took the game, 9-0.
Leanna Donahue got the win in the second game from in the circle, giving up just three hits.
The team returns to action tomorrow when they face Lehman College again at 11 a.m. The winner of that game will play in the finals at 1:15 p.m.
