Mahwah, N.J. - Hunter College women's volleyball earned a big win on Tuesday night, defeating Ramapo College in three sets with scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-22.
The Hawks improve to 4-1 this season, while the Roadrunners drop to 3-2.
Ramapo started the match strong, jumping out to a 6-2 lead before the Hawks would tie the score off Roadrunner errors. The lead changed four more times until Hunter pulled ahead for good with three-straight kills from
Marlena Budna and
Taylor Haiduk to make the score 20-17. It remained close, but a
Julia Connolly kill sealed the win as the Hawks took the first set, 25-20.
In the second set the Purple and Gold took an early advantage, making the score 13-10 before going a on a huge run.
Emily Wasson and Connolly recorded kills, while Haiduk registered a service ace to contribute to seven-straight points for the Hawks, giving them a 20-11 lead, and eventually securing the 25-15 victory.
Hunter once again took control of the third set early on, but Ramapo did not back away easily, staying within five points of the Hawks. The Roadrunners went on a run to trail by just two with a score of 23-21 but Connolly tallied a set-winning kill to give Hunter the victory.
The Hawks hit .202, while holding Ramapo to a hitting percentage of .072 and also recording seven blocks to the Roadrunners' one.Â
Connolly led the squad offensively wiith 12 kills, while Haiduk followed with 11 and Budna notched seven. Haiduk added 17 digs and Budna had a team-high four blocks in the win.Â
Miranda Hogan paced the Purple and Gold offense with 31 assists as
Haley Trunkett controlled the defense with a team-leading 24 digs.Â
The Hawks return to action on Thursday, September 14 when they travel to the College of Staten Island for a conference match at 7 p.m.
