New York, N.Y. - Hunter College women's volleyball went 2-0 at a tri-match hosted at the Hunter Sportsplex on Saturday, defeating Purchase College and Alfred University in three sets each.
The Hawks own a 7-1 overall record for their best start to a season since 2008.
Hunter 3, Purchase 0
The Hawks started the day with a three-set sweep over Purchase College with scores of 25-12, 25-8 and 25-13.
The Panthers started the first set with a 3-2 edge, but the Hawks quickly pulled ahead off points from
Kendra Moore and
Julia Connolly. They closed it out with a 6-1 run to take the 1-0 lead in the match.
The Purple and Gold went on a 10-1 run to begin the second set, finding kills from
Isabelle Lawrence and
Marlena Budna to lead 11-3.
From there Hunter's
Brittney Wang served 11-straight, including five service aces as the Hawks dominated the Panthers to make the score 22-4 and eventually take it, 25-8.
The Hawks once again pulled away early on in the third set, sealing the victory with kills from
Kayshawna Richardson and
Karina Young for the 3-0 sweep.
Taylor Haiduk led the squad with nine kills and a .800 hitting percentage, while Connolly followed with eight kills and no errors in the match.
Miranda Hogan tallied a team-high 19 assists and
Cristy Pariama followed with 11.
The Hawks hit .400 in the win, while holding the Panthers to a .000 hitting percentage.
Hunter 3, Alfred 0
The day was finished off with a 3-0 rout of Alfred University, featuring scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-18.Â
The lead went back-and-forth in the opening points of the first set before the Hawks found their rhythm. Leading by just two points, Hunter closed out the set with seven-straight points, with the help of three kills from Budna, for the 25-16 win.
The Purple and Gold got the early advantage in the second but the Saxons managed to catch up, tying the set 15-15. The Hawks went to work, outscoring Alfred 10-2 to take it, 25-17.
The third set remained close until the Hawks gained control off Saxon errors to take a 20-12 edge. Alfred regained composure to go on a run and trail by just four points, but the Hawks got it done off a kill from Young and a service ace from Hogan to get a 25-18 win and defeat the Saxons.
Hunter held the Saxons to a .012 hitting percentage in the match, tallying 38 kills to Alfred's 19. Haiduk and Budna each tallied a team-leading 12 kills as Haiduk added 11 digs.
Haley Trunkett led the defense with 12 digs and Hogan boasted 38 assists in the victory.
The team returns to action on September 20 when they travel to St. Joseph's L.I. for a 7 p.m. match.
