New London, Conn. - Hunter College women's volleyball went 1-1 at a Saturday tri-match, falling to #15 ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology before defeating United States Coast Guard Academy.
The Hawks are now 9-2 overall this season and continue to be 3-0 in conference play.
MIT 3, Hunter 0
The Hawks fell in the first match of the day to #15 MIT with scores of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-21. The squad stayed with the Engineers for most of the first set, until MIT began to pull away off a 5-0 run.
With the score 23-17, the Hawks committed two attack errors to give the Engineers the set, 25-18.
MIT took charge at the beginning of the second set until the Hawks tied it up at 10. The Engineers scored eight-straight points to take back the lead, 20-11, but the Purple and Gold returned from a timeout to go on a run of their own.
Kills from
Julia Connolly and
Marlena Budna sparked a 6-0 run to get the Hawks back in the game and then several MIT errors helped the Hawks to tie the score at 24. The Engineers managed to record two kills to close out the second, 26-24.Â
Hunter fell behind in the third but stayed close, never falling behind by more than six points and then catching up to trail by just one, 22-21. The Engineers got the last three points to take the set, 25-21 and win the match, 3-0.
Connolly and Haiduk lead the team with nine kills each as the Hawks were held to just a .096 hitting percentage.
Miranda Hogan tallied 24 assists and
Haley Trunkett earned a team-leading 17 digs.
Hunter 3, Coast Guard 1
The Hawks defeated the Bears in four sets later in the day, featuring scores of 25-15, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-23.
Hunter took the first set with ease, outscoring Coast Guard 11-6 in the second half of the set to get the victory.Â
The lead changed several times in the second set as the Hawks struggled to remain in charge. With the Bears leading 21-20, the Hawks found kills from Haiduk and Budna, but it would not be enough as Coast Guard took it, 25-23.
Coast Guard seemed in control at the beginning of the third until the Hawks went on an enormous run, recording 15-straight points off serves from Connolly to pull ahead, 19-8. The team closed it out off a Bear error with a score of 25-13.
The fourth set was close, featuring 13 tied scores. With Hunter down 23-22, Budna recorded a kill to tie it up and Hogan got the set-winning point as the Hawks took the match, 3-1.
Haiduk led the team with 14 kills as Budna followed with 11 and
Emily Wasson added nine. Trunkett continued to lead the defense with 18 digs, while
Sunghee Cho recorded 11. Hogan tallied 35 assists and 10 digs in the win.
The Hawks return to action on September 26 when they travel to Lehman College for a 6 p.m. match.
